Scotland by Rail - Escorted Holidays

Scotland's bold culture, rich heritage and astounding natural beauty make it the perfect backdrop for a truly remarkable holiday. Our rail tours of Scotland introduce you to the heart and soul of the enthralling country, from the rural islands that lie just of its coast to its lively capital of Edinburgh which draws visitors throughout the year. Many of our rail holidays give you the opportunity to admire Scotland's dramatically beautiful Highlands and lochs in comfort during journeys on renowned heritage railways.

Exploring Scotland with Rail Discoveries

There are a wide variety of excursions included in our rail tours of Scotland, which range from scenic tours such as boat trips and city tours to more sociable activities like whisky tasting. Guests also have plenty of free time for exploring independently, meaning that you will have the opportunity to shop, socialise or revisit sights.

There are many jewels amongst Scotland's breath-taking landscape including the vibrant capital of Edinburgh where historic fortresses and a medieval Old Town blend with the city's more modern areas. There are also many idyllic coastal hamlets such as the charming seaport of Oban where you can sample fresh seafood in a local café or explore the local attractions that line its port. During your time in the more rural areas of Scotland you may witness some of the country's phenomenal wildlife which includes a variety of birds and mammals.

“Good hotel, great Edinburgh guide, good trips, especially the Jacobite express, the highland wildlife park…strathspey railway was a bit of anticlimax….Julie,a very Good guide was very attentive and informative…..one point I did make to her was when we were getting on the train and the seats were reserved was that she said just get on the train and find a seat instead of telling which seats were allocated to each person. This could have meant a party of 4 being left with one person of the four being left to a seat of their own and would have saved any arguments who was sitting where. She did agree when I made this observation to her……I book a lot with rail discoveries but I think a useful tip would be for all guides to odopt a policy of stating that on coach trips please keep to your same seats as you started the day with as on one trip other travellers had removed our bag (left on coach)with driver present so when we got back on board we didn’t know which seats were vacant and bag was placed on other travellers seat….I am a leader of a walking group and also book group tours with yourselves and Riviera Travel and they use the above policy and it works very well, and saves any rushing or arguments about someone pinching someone else’s seat…..Overall a great experience but would improve a lot if the little niggles were taken out by more allocation work done by the guide,ie sitting parties or couples together on trains and coaches as some of these journeys are of a long duration
