The Flam Railway

The Flåm Railway takes you from waterside Flåm to mountainous Myrdal, passing impressive waterfalls, leafy canyons and large fjords along the way. Climbing into the surrounding peaks, the route is a majorly impressive feat of rail engineering, particularly as its one of the steepest railways in the world - operating on a gradient of 5.5%. The carriages are rustic with traditional wooden benches and large panoramic windows.

“I thought the tour manager was just right for the group. The staff in the hotel in Bergen were cold and unwelcoming. Apparently Rail Discoveries office booked the group on a train from Flam to Myrdal when it should have been the reverse direction, and although we did eventually arrive in Flam, we had very little time there, which was disappointing. The arrival at Oslo airport was very long drawn out, and it would have been easier if our instructions about where to wait after we had collected our luggage, had been more precise. Not seeing any bags with Rail Discovery labels, I assumed (wrongly) that the rest of the group had gone through the final barrier and were waiting outside. It was a worrying three quarters of an hour for me.
