Our thrilling journey on the Harder Kulm Funicular Railway takes us from lakeside Interlaken to the peak of Harder Kulm mountain at 4,337ft above sea level. The line makes use of sleek, modern trains, with tilted windows to emphasise the magnificent views along the railway for everyone in the carriage. The train leaves from the funicular base station in Interlaken, overlooked by the estuary of the River Aare. From here, the line begins its steep climb of more than 2,300ft almost immediately. As the track begins to gain height, it runs past the Alpenwildpark, a glorious section of parkland which celebrates the region's classically beautiful Alpine scenery.
Our journey continues as the railway curves up towards the summit, passing over a winding mountainside road that veers off back towards the lake. From here the landscape gets steadily wilder - and the views are even more beautiful. Before long, the vista opens up to reveal Interlaken, Lakes Thun and Brienz, and even the looming peaks of the Eiger, Jungfrau, and Mönch mountains. Before long the line curves sharply as it makes the final approach to the summit of Harder Kulm. We then arrive at the top station, from where you can admire the views or visit the castle-like restaurant.
