Drachenfelsbahn

The Drachenfelsbahn cog railway leading to the top of the Drachenfels opened in 1883 and was very popular, as it drastically reduced the time and effort taken to reach the summit. The line is just less than a mile long, and climbs 220 metres above sea level on its way to the peak.

In 1960 the decision was made to replace the steam traction with diesels, and these engines are still in use today. The railway offers the fantastic sight of the Siebengebirge Hills, and one of the major attractions is the ruined castle, halfway up the 321-metre hill.
