Centovalli Railway

The Centovalli Railway was originally planned to connect Locarno in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland with Domodossola in the very north of Italy. The line's opening was delayed considerably owing to the First World War, but construction was resumed almost immediately afterwards, and the first services began in 1923.

The railway's name means One Hundred Valleys, referring to the many valleys the line travels through on its route, which reveals a landscape of wide gorges and rushing waterfalls.

“A very enjoyable holiday - beautiful scenery, lovely fellow travellers and friendly, helpful tour guide Karen. We particularly enjoyed the boat trips and other excursions. Some of the train journeys were challenging but to be expected when travelling such long distances.
