Day 2 - Montecatini

Enjoy a free morning in Turin to discover this handsome city before continuing to Montecatini Terme, your stunning base for the next six nights. Nestled in the Tuscan hills, Montecatini Terme rose to fame as a spa town during the 18th century. The modern town is linked by funicular railway to its medieval Old Town. Perched on a hill with incredible views over the surrounding countryside, you'll discover a myriad of beautiful historical buildings and labyrinthine streets.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 3 - Montecatini

You're free to relax at the hotel or explore Montecatini further. You could take a trip on the Funicolare di Montecatini Terme. This mountainside cable car has been running since 1897, and journeys up to the Old Town of Montecatini Alto. The beautiful central piazza - surrounded by ancient municipal buildings, enticing restaurants and cafés - is the perfect spot to relax with a drink, soaking up the atmospheric surroundings of this unique Tuscan destination.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 4 - Florence

Head to the Renaissance city of Florence for a guided tour, joining a local guide to wander the narrow, twisting streets and admire buildings which have inspired generations of artists. Visit the striking Duomo, whose characteristic terracotta dome is an icon of the Florentine skyline. The jewel in the city's crown, the cathedral dates back to 393 AD. You will also see the unique 14th-century Ponte Vecchio, or 'Old Bridge', filled with jewellery and goldsmith shops. Afterwards, there's free time to climb the 414 steps of Giotto's Campanile, for incredible views across the rooftops. Alternatively, you could pre-book a visit to one of Florence's art galleries and museums - world-renowned Uffizi being one of the most popular.

Includes
  • Breakfast
Day 5 - Pisa & Lucca

Take the train to Lucca, a walled city that encloses a fabulous Roman piazza and many medieval churches and buildings. Discover quaint cobbled streets and open piazzas, or walk on the wide path of the preserved walls for great views of the city. Afterwards, continue to Pisa, where you visit the famous Leaning Tower- a Romanesque, free-standing bell tower built in the 12th century and a true icon of Italy. There's time to discover Pisa's Old Town, and the Field of Miracles, where you'll find the historic Duomo.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 6 - Montecatini

Enjoy another free day to explore Montecatini at your own pace. You may like to visit the thermal baths the town is known for. Having grown in popularity since the 15-century for their medicinal properties, these natural springs now make up Italy's largest spa resort.

Includes
  • Breakfast
Day 7 - Siena

Today's excursion is to Siena, where you take a guided tour. The centre of Siena has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, and for good reason. Known as one of Europe's most amazing medieval squares, the magnificent, shell-shaped Piazza del Campo is surrounded by ancient buildings and crowned by the Torre del Mangia. With its many pavement cafés, the piazza is the perfect place to pause for a glass of Chianti or a cone of gelato. Siena's stunning cathedral is also a sight to behold; a magnificent structure built in white and black marble stripes that inside, is home to artworks by Donatello and other renowned artists.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 8 - Nice

Bid farewell to Tuscany as a coach transfers you to Viareggio for the rail journey to Nice for an overnight stay. A smaller group size would have made it a more pleasurable experience. 40+ travellers are too many for just one guide.

The holiday was well organised and largely stress-free. Once we needed the tour guide to stay at the ticket barriers to ensure that everyone was through safely. However, generally we were well briefed and assisted, without too much mollycoddling. The places we visited in Tuscany were spectacular and interesting, but it was a shame that there was not time to go inside any of the great buildings, especially Cathedrals. Instead, there was a lot of walking around towns and cities. The hotels were good and Montecatini was an excellent base. Thank you for a memorable holiday.
