Schneebergbahn

Our journey on the superb Schneebergbahn takes us through some outstanding scenery, travelling just over six miles from Puchberg am Schneeberg and through Lower Austria's winding valleys to the peak of Schneeberg Mountain - the highest point in Austria. The line climbs a total of 3,986ft during the journey.

The sleek, modern diesel train - nicknamed 'The Salamander' for its distinctive livery - departs from the charming spa town of Puchberg am Schneeberg, and runs through the town before entering a valley in the shadow of the mountains.

From here the narrow-gauge railway begins to climb sharply, with the train making use of the rack-and-pinion to negotiate the ascent. Before long, the railway passes through lush meadows and coniferous forests as it continues to climb through the lower hillsides and up towards the towering peaks. Our journey continues as the line snakes along a woodland ledge, before passing through two short tunnels to cross one of the most exposed sections of the mountain. The ledge then opens up to reveal a beautiful view of the idyllic villages nestled in the valley below.

Finally The Salamander arrives at the summit of Schneeberg - officially the highest railway station in Austria, and a celebrated beauty spot.
