On some of our tours we enjoy a popular journey on the fabulous Drahtseilbahn, also known as the Austusburg Cable Railway. The line links the town of Erdmannsdorf with Augustusburg, a lively resort situated higher up in the Ore Mountains.
Our journey begins at the base station in the heart of Erdmannsdorf. On departing the station, we begin our steep climb in earnest; the railway ascends well over 500ft in just less than a mile. Quickly leaving the town behind, the scenery becomes more dramatic. Soon stony ledges and verdant woodland comes into view as we continue our climb. Our modern electric train then makes a sweeping, wide curve around the hillside, ascending past grassy banks and into a dense forest. Here the single track railway reaches a short passing loop, to enable descending traffic to pass safely. This stretch of track is a particular favourite with rail enthusiasts.
The journey continues as the train emerges from the loop and crosses over a bubbling stream, with an open panorama over the undulating scenery below. Then, following a final steep stretch, the funicular line runs into charming Augustusburg, which is watched over by its brooding castle.
