The Brienz-Rothorn Mountain Railway climbs from Brienz at the eastern end of Lake Brienz, to the summit of the Brienzer Rothorn Mountain, passing some truly breathtaking scenery on the journey. The railway first opened in 1892, and closed in 1914 due to the onset of the First World War. But, instead of resuming service after the war had finished, the railway carried out essential maintenance work and finally re-opened in 1931.
Unusually, the line was never electrified and operated only with steam. From 1953, it became Switzerland's only steam railway - a title it held until 1990, when it introduced some diesel traction alongside the steam engines. But even today, the majority of its locomotive power is still steam-based.
