Oberammergau 2020

In the far south of Germany, in the province of Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the Austrian border, lies the unassuming, yet disarmingly charming town of Oberammergau. Surrounded by green countryside and the steep valley hills, Oberammergau is very much a classic town for this region, quietly existing in this idyllic green setting.

Once every ten years however, this sleepy town comes alive with the performances of the world-famous Oberammergau Passion Play. For the last 376 years, barring a break for the Second World War, this play takes over Oberammergau as over two thousand townspeople produce a heart-wrenching epic detailing the Passion of Christ and his final days. Across the summer, hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to the town for the play, which is split into two halves each lasting two and a half hours each.

There are few theatrical extravaganzas quite the same as the Oberammergau Passion Play. Held only once every ten years, this incredible play takes place at the heart of beautiful Bavaria in the charming town of Oberammergau itself.

The oldest passion play still being performed in the world, the Oberammergau Passion Play features a cast and crew of over two thousand villagers, who work together to create elaborate and stunning stages to re-enact the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Excellent performances, spectacular sets, all held against the wonderful backdrop of Bavarian hills make this a true spectacle to observe. Our tickets, procured for Rail Discoveries offer some of the best seats in the house, held over heated flooring and under a specially constructed roof.

The play has a fascinating history. Around 1633, the inhabitants of Oberammergau were under threat from the terrible bubonic which was ravaging Europe at the time. The villagers turned to religion and pleaded with God to spare them from the plague, and in return, they would put on a passion play every ten years. The following year, the plague's progress slowed to a halt and the Oberammergau inhabitants put on the first ever play. Since then, it has been produced every ten years with a short break throughout the Second World War.

The next showing takes place in 2020, and we are proud to offer a range of tours which combine a viewing of the passion play with a variety of other excursions to destinations including Germany and Italy. For more information, take a look at the options above.
