At Rail Discoveries, we believe passionately that 'by rail' is the finest way to travel. Trains allow you to sit back, relax and literally watch the world go by your window from the comfort of your seat as you make your way across Europe - or even beyond.

But sometimes, you may feel it's just not possible to make the time to travel by train to destinations that are a little bit further afield. We asked our customers, whether having the choice of a Fly:Rail holiday would appeal to them. After receiving an enthusiastic response, we are pleased to introduce our collection of Fly:Rail tours - tours that depart from and return to the UK by air, taking in beautiful countries such as Spain and Italy.

“A varied exploration of Lisbon, Porto and the Douro valley on this rail, coach and easy walking tour. Introduction to the cities by local experts and comprehensive advice on how to access the many cultural and scenic attractions on offer. Excellent visit to winery in Douro Valley with no hard sell at the end! Hotels were of a very good standard especially the Grande Hotel do Porto with an attractive and characterful classical style. Tour leader provided excellent leadership and support with daily briefing notes and nothing seemed to be too much trouble.

“I thought the tour manager was just right for the group. The staff in the hotel in Bergen were cold and unwelcoming. Apparently Rail Discoveries office booked the group on a train from Flam to Myrdal when it should have been the reverse direction, and although we did eventually arrive in Flam, we had very little time there, which was disappointing. The arrival at Oslo airport was very long drawn out, and it would have been easier if our instructions about where to wait after we had collected our luggage, had been more precise. Not seeing any bags with Rail Discovery labels, I assumed (wrongly) that the rest of the group had gone through the final barrier and were waiting outside. It was a worrying three quarters of an hour for me.

Rail Discoveries takes thousands of passengers each year on holidays by rail to beautiful European destinations such as Switzerland, France, Germany, Spain and Italy, and for many customers the journey by rail is an important part of the holiday experience.

But sometimes, you may feel it's just not possible to make the time to travel by train to destinations that are a little bit further afield. We asked our customers, whether having the choice of a Fly:Rail holiday would appeal to them. After receiving an enthusiastic response, we are pleased to introduce our collection of Fly:Rail tours, namely tours that depart from and return to the UK by air.

Taking a short flight from London to southern Europe allows you to enjoy a little more time in your main destination. Much like our rail departures, your Tour Manager meets you in London at your departure point, and remains with you throughout the tour, so you can start enjoying your holiday before you've even left the UK.

What About Rail Travel?

Our Fly:Rail tours include all of the classic features that have made our existing escorted holidays so popular - from centrally-located hotels to an enthralling package of sightseeing and excursions; and from many included meals to the services of a dedicated professional Tour Manager.

Our Fly:Rail programme also includes, where possible, superb rail travel in and around your main tour destination. We believe that travelling around by rail really is the best way to see a region, and that's why we include journeys on the finest trains. From efficient high-speed trains in Andalucia to lines that are widely regarded as attractions in themselves, such as Switzerland's magnificent Bernina Express, we admire some of Europe's finest attractions from the rails.

If you would like an overnight stay in a nearby hotel for the first or final night of your tour, simply call our team of friendly Tour Advisors for assistance, or make an appointment to speak to us in person at our office in the centre of York during office hours (Monday- Friday: 9.00am - 5.30pm).

Andalucia

Situated on Spain southern coast, Andalucia is an exciting melting pot of cultures that marks the meeting point of Europe and Africa. High-speed rail services have made this region more accessible than ever, but a flight will allow you more time to explore this glorious region, its lively cities and outstanding historic landmarks such as the iconic Alhambra Palace.

Italian Lakes

Taking the train to the world-famous Italian lakes allows you to break the journey with an overnight in France or Switzerland. But flying directly there lets visitors explore more of these lakes and their beautiful surroundings, like the stunning Dolomite Mountains.

Central Europe

Travelling to this fascinating region of grand architecture and rich cultural heritage usually requires a romantic overnight sleeper service. Taking a flight allows you to reach the mesmerising city of Berlin directly.
