Days 1-2 To St Raphaël
To St Raphaël

London to St Raphaël

Board the Eurostar to Paris at St Pancras International. On arrival in the French capital, transfer on to the rail service south to St Raphaël. Gateway to the expensive resorts of the French Riviera, St Raphaël has retained some of its Art Deco charms, a hangover from its heyday as a 30s jazz hangout.

On Day 2 you'll make visits to Notre-Dame de la Victoire Basilica, built in an eclectic mix of architectural styles including Byzantine and Moorish, as well as some of the local markets on a guided tour.

  • Day 1 - Dinner
  • Day 2 - Breakfast
Days 3-4 St Tropez
St Tropez

St Tropez and at leisure

Take a boat ride to St Tropez this morning, made famous by the Hollywood glamour of the 1950s. Here you are at leisure; perhaps watch the yachts jostle for position at the Old Port, walk the cobblestoned streets of La Ponche Quarter or relax on the beach.

Day 4 is free for you to further explore St Raphaël, or further afield, independently.

  • Day 3 - Breakfast, Dinner
  • Day 4 - Breakfast
Day 5 Nice

Nice & Monte Carlo

Board the train to Nice this morning and enjoy some free time to see the Promenade des Anglais, a palm-tree-lined version of the Champs-Elysee. Looking out towards the sparkling Mediterranean this promenade is a favourite place to take a stroll, gazing out at the sea and the stretch of white sand which follows it around the bay. As popular with the locals as it is with travellers, and often used as a meeting point, the promenade has become a picture-postcard scene that showcases the best of the French Riviera in one vista. Separating the glamorous shops and hotels from the beach , 'the walk of the English' owes its name to the earliest visitors here, at a time when it was just beginning to be regarded as a tourist destination.

Browse some of the upmarket, beach-fronted shops before continuing to Monte Carlo known for its extravagant casino, which was featured in the James Bond film, 'Never Say Never Again'. Situated in the tiny principality of Monaco, from here it's just ten miles to Italy.

Days 6-7 Grasse

Grasse & St Paul-de-Vence

Travel to Grasse, renowned for its perfume making, and take a tour of the Fragonard Parfumerie.

Seemingly cradled by the surrounding cliffs and hills, the charming town of Grasse is famous as the centre of the world's perfume industry. Throughout much of the Middle Ages, Grasse was primarily known for its leather tanneries. Yet in the mid-16th century, the French queen Catherine de' Medici popularised scented leather gloves. As the hills surrounding Grasse are populated with fields of jasmine, roses and lavender (to name a few), the town was in an ideal position to maximise on the new fashion. The perfume trade was an unprecedented success, and a number of the perfumeries founded at the time are still making new fragrances today.

One of the town's oldest perfumeries is the Parfumerie Fragonard, which has been sited in its current premises since 1782. In the 1920s it gained its current name in tribute to Jean- Honoré Fragonard, Grasse's most famous artist. Nowadays, the perfume factory still produces perfumes, soaps and cosmetics using their timehonoured traditional methods.

Afterwards you'll continue to the beautiful medieval 'perched' village of St-Paul-de-Vence. Set on a hill overlooking the Nice hinterland, this beautiful village is one of the most famous in the region. The village originally developed in the Middle Ages as a French frontier and defensive post against the Duchy of Savoy. Due to its strategic position, the village remained very much intact and, amongst the narrow winding lanes, it still boasts a wealth of 16th century architecture today.

The village's historic ramparts are still complete, and a walk along these affords great views over the many red-roofed, sandstone villas and cypress trees, as well as the surrounding landscape. Having been a playground of the rich and famous for decades now, Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a joy to discover.

Spend Day 7 at leisure, seeing more of the sights around St Raphaël or enjoying the facilities at the hotel.
