Hopton Hall

Visit Hopton Hall this morning. An 18th-century country house which is today a Grade II listed building. Take the opportunity to wander around its attractive garden, adorned this time of year by carpets of snowdrops. While at the Hall you can choose to take lunch at the excellent on-site tea rooms. The hall was the former residence of the prominent Gell family. Admiral John Gell led a distinguished career in the Royal Navy, taking a Spanish ship as a prize and later discovering that it contained 2 million dollars and other goods valued over 200,000 pounds. He was reportedly born at Hopton Hall. In the grounds you can enjoy a woodland walk, see wildlife lakes, ornamental ponds and well manicured gardens.

The valley is considered to be one of Derbyshire's most unspoilt. Later we visit Bolsover Castle by coach. This early 17th-century aristocratic retreat was built by the Cavendish family on the site of a former 12th-century medieval castle. You enjoy a guided tour of this magnificent building. You'll see the 'Little Castle', built to entertain guests by William Cavendish, it features medieval turrets, lavish rooms and beautifully painted ceilings. Also on the tour is the Fountain Garden, built with a statue of Venus in the centre, the garden features 5,000 plants and flowers, planted to display the garden as it would have been in its heyday.
