Itinerary

Day 1 - To Brig

Fly from London or your local airport to Zurich, and continue by rail to Brig. Nestled in a valley close to the Italian border, the town boasts a beautiful blend of styles, with many Italian-style buildings dotted amidst the otherwise typically Swiss architecture. You spend four nights here.

Includes
  • Dinner
Day 2 - Zermatt

Travel to Zermatt, a picturesque village overlooked by the craggy peak of Switzerland's most iconic mountain, the Matterhorn. Zermatt is a picturesque gateway to the mountains, and as such, is a haven for skiers, climbers, mountaineers, and hikers. You have some free time here to discover Zermatt's historic buildings, souvenir shops, and excellent bars and restaurants, all set against an incredible mountain backdrop, before returning to Brig in your own time. Perhaps get to know the local area with a visit to the Matterhorn Museum, which provides an insight into Zermatt's rich history and recounts the story of the various attempts to conquer the nearby Matterhorn.

Includes
  • Breakfast
Day 3 - The Centovalli Railway

Travel to Domodossola in Italy for a journey on the Centovalli Railway. You're immersed in beautiful scenery as you wind through the 'One Hundred Valleys' that give the railway its name, passing deep ravines, travelling over bridges, and through tunnels on a route that's been famous for its beauty since opening in 1923. You journey along the scenic line to Locarno, on the northern shores of Lake Maggiore. As Switzerland's lowest city, the climate here is more Mediterranean than Alpine, and you have some free time to experience its public gardens, local shops, and wonderful lakeside walks before you return to your hotel.

Includes
  • Breakfast
Day 4 - Montreux

Take the train to Lake Geneva, Switzerland's largest lake, for a visit to Montreux. This stylish lakeside town sits in a bay on the shores of the lake, surrounded by vineyard-covered hillsides and the distant peaks of the Alps. The town is home to the 13th-century Château de Chillon, a striking castle set on an island that rises out of the lake. Montreux is also the former home of Freddie Mercury, who recorded six Queen albums here. A bronze statue of the iconic frontman can be found on the promenade and is almost perpetually covered in flowers left by fans. Take time to explore before returning to Brig by rail.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 5 - The Glacier Express

Leave Brig behind today, experiencing a breathtaking trip aboard the Glacier Express, one of the world's most iconic rail journeys. Travelling in panoramic carriages, the train carries you through spectacular Alpine scenery, which you have plenty of time to admire through the large observation windows of the 'world's slowest express train.' Journey across hundreds of bridges and viaducts, through pretty wildflower meadows, and past the towering peaks of the snow-dusted Swiss Alps on this truly unforgettable journey. You arrive in Davos, where you spend three nights.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 6 - Davos

Enjoy a day free to explore the town or the surrounding area. Davos is a popular ski resort and the highest town in the Swiss Alps, with a number of fantastic boutiques, cafés, and bars to discover. Nearby, you'll find Klosters, a quintessentially charming Alpine town that is renowned as a favourite destination of the British Royal Family.

Includes
  • Breakfast
Day 7 - The Bernina Express

Board the iconic Bernina Express today for a journey on one of Switzerland's most scenic routes, from Davos to Poschiavo. A spectacular means of crossing the Alps, the route is one of the highest railways in the mountain range, and runs through ancient landscapes made up of rushing streams, steep hillsides, and dramatic valleys. Enjoy time to explore Poschiavo at your own pace. This Italian-speaking Swiss town is set in a serene valley, and is a pleasure to explore, with quaint, pastel-hued buildings lending an Italian atmosphere to the place.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 8 - Zurich & home

Your holiday ends today, as you return to Zurich by rail for your return flight back to the UK.

The parts of the holiday organised by Rail Discoveries was nothing short of fantastic. The tour manager was excellent throughout. Even when something out of the manager's control, late train for example, occured things were quickly put right. The only downside was the hotel in Brig. The accommodation and restaurant was excellent and we could see why Rail Discoveries choose it. But a private party caused a fire alarm just after midnight (excessive use of dry ice apparently) followed by an announcement that the alarm was a test woke everyone up. The function continued till 5.00am despite phone calls to reception and the personal intervention of the tour manager. I doubt if the hotel will be used again but it was the only flaw in an otherwise fantastic holiday.

This has to be the worst planned tour I have ever experienced in 12 GRJ holidays. Thank goodness for a tour manager able to think on his feet and resolve problems not of his making. GRJ refused to let me travel direct to Zurich on Swissair, routing me instead via Amsterdam on KLM which cancelled the first leg of my return flight. In the itinerary, GRJ had us departing on a train before the connecting train arrived. The itinerary was littered with errors and omissions. They seemed to go out of their way to minimise costs regardless of the impact on their customers. In Switzerland many, but not all, of the day trips were very enjoyable thanks to the company of fellow travellers, but what a shame we had to travel on group tickets instead of using inclusive Swiss travel passes as has been the custom in the past. Much needs to be done by GRJ to persuade me ever to travel with them again.

It was a great holiday and only reduced to 4 stars because we felt the Centovalli rail journey was a very poor experience on a cramped train, no opportunity to take photographs, no air conditioning in our train car and the final destination of Locarno was not really worth such a long journey.

Switzerland is wonderful and there were good things about this holiday but unfortunately they were outweighed by the poor. Train schedules were far too tight, especially with demographic of your target age range. You needed oxygen by the time you reached the hotel in davos with your case! I had no hot water in 2 rooms and was finally give a good room on second night. Food was awful in second hotel Strela and staff not very friendly. Lights in lounge switched off at 9.45. Hotel in Brig was excellent and staff really helpful. Tour Manager appeared to get info at last minute e.g reservations and not at all eg bus to second hotel Not a holiday I could recommend as it currently exists needs an overhaul.
