About the tour

Experience the best of Switzerland on a tour that showcases classic Alpine scenery. Enjoy journeys aboard three iconic railways as well as time to explore elegant resorts at your own pace on this typically Swiss tour.

What’s included

Days 1 - Brig

Flying from the UK to Zurich, you continue by rail to Brig. Nestled in a valley close to the Italian border, the town offers a beautiful blend of styles, with many Italian-style buildings dotted amidst the otherwise typically Swiss architecture. You spend four nights here.

  • Dinner
Day 2 - Zermatt

Travel to Zermatt today, a picturesque village overlooked by the craggy peak of Switzerland's most iconic mountain, the Matterhorn. Zermatt is a picturesque gateway to the mountains, and as such, is a haven for skiers, climbers, mountaineers and hikers. You have some free time here to discover Zermatt's historic buildings, souvenir shops, and excellent bars and restaurants, all set against an incredible mountain backdrop, before returning to Brig in your own time. Perhaps get to know the local area with a visit to the Matterhorn Museum, which provides an insight into Zermatt's rich history as well as recounting the story of the various attempts to conquer the nearby Matterhorn.

  • Breakfast
Day 3 - The Centovalli Railway

Travel to Domodossola in Italy for a journey on the Centovalli Railway. You're immersed in beautiful scenery as you wind through the 'One Hundred Valleys' that give the railway its name, passing deep ravines, travelling over bridges, and through tunnels on a route that has been famous for its beauty since opening in 1923. You journey along the scenic line to Locarno, on the northern shores of Lake Maggiore. As Switzerland's lowest city, the climate here is more Mediterranean than Alpine, and you have some free time to explore its public gardens, local shops, and wonderful lakeside walks before you return to your hotel.

  • Breakfast
Day 4 - Montreux

Travel by rail to Lake Geneva, Switzerland's largest lake, for an excursion to Montreux. This stylish lakeside town sits in a sheltered bay on the shores of the lake, surrounded by vineyard-covered hillsides and the distant peaks of the Alps. The town is known as the home of magnificent 13th-century Château de Chillon, a striking castle set on its own island, rising out of the waters of the lake. Montreux is also the former home of Freddie Mercury, who recorded six Queen albums here. A bronze statue of the iconic front man can be found on the lakeside promenade, and is almost perpetually covered in a layer of flowers left by devoted fans. Take some time to explore here before returning to Brig by rail.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 5 - The Glacier Express

Leave Brig behind today, experiencing a breathtaking trip aboard the Glacier Express, one of the world's most iconic rail journeys. Travelling in panoramic carriages, the train carries you through spectacular Alpine scenery, which you have plenty of time to admire through the large observation windows of the 'world's slowest express train.' Journey across hundreds of bridges and viaducts, through pretty wildflower meadows, and past the towering peaks of the snow-dusted Swiss Alps on this truly unforgettable journey. You arrive in Davos, where you spend three nights.

  • Day 5 - Breakfast, Dinner
  • Day 6 - Breakfast
Day 6 - Free time

Day 6 is free to explore the town or the surrounding area. Davos is a popular ski resort and the highest town in the Swiss Alps, with a number of fantastic boutiques, cafés, and bars to discover. Nearby, you'll find Klosters, a quintessentially charming Alpine town that is renowned as a favourite destination of the British Royal Family.

  • Breakfast
Day 7- The Bernina Express

Board the iconic Bernina Express today for a journey on one of Switzerland's most scenic routes, from Davos to Poschiavo. A spectacular means of crossing the Alps, the route is one of the highest railways in the mountain range, and runs through ancient landscapes made up of rushing streams, steep hillsides, and dramatic valleys. Enjoy time to explore Poschiavo at your own pace. This Italian-speaking Swiss town is set in a serene valley, and is a pleasure to explore, with quaint, pastel-hued buildings lending an Italian atmosphere to the place.

  • Day 7 - Breakfast, Dinner
  • Day 8 - Breakfast
Day 8 - London

Your holiday ends on Day 8, as you return to Zurich by rail for your return flight back to the UK.

The Davao hotel bath tubs were too deep forme---I was afraid I would fall if I took a shower in the tub. All else was fine, Jim Egan

Rail Discoveries is an outstanding company, in my estimation; this was my second tour with them. The less-than-perfect rating is based on the lodging. The hotel in Fiesch was nice and the staff, for the most part, friendly. The food was not as well done as at other hotels I have stayed. The train ride to and from Brig left us eating very late dinners, with no time to enjoy the scenery in either place; perhaps Brig would have been a better lodging choice? The hotel in Davos was mediocre. The room was nice enough for the cost, but the food was not good and the staff barely present if anyone had a question or need.

we did enjoed the train trips but we were not happy with the short time we had in Locarno after a 5 hour train ride. the 1st hotel was very tired looking but they did help out with the food if you could not eat what was on the menu. the 2nd hotel was a lot smarter but the food was not great at all which was very surprisingll
