London to Aritzo
Day 1

London to Aritzo

Trenino Verde
Day 2

The ‘Trenino Verde’

On today's excursion we transfer to Isili, where we join the 'Trenino Verde' or 'little green train'. We board a classic railcar - chartered exclusively to Great Rail Journeys customers - for an amazing journey to Belvì. The journey passes through leafy countryside as we continue our journey inland; with lush vegetation running down from the towering mountains towards the tracks. The railway twists and turns and uses a number of engineering feats to traverse the wild landscape, before our arrival in Belvì. Here we have free time, before travelling back to Aritzo by coach, on a winding route through the magnificent countryside.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
  • Trenino Verde trip
Costa Smerelda
Day 3

Orgosolo and the Costa Smeralda

Leaving Aritzo behind, we travel further into Sardinia's lush mountainous countryside, an undulating area dotted with centuries-old villages and cut through by little winding tracks. Here we visit Orgosolo, a town with a politically-charged, turbulent history, that has emerged as one of Sardinia's most unusual destinations. Your time here is free for you to explore; the town's biggest draw is undoubtedly its vibrant, graffiti-style murals. These vivid paintings adorn many of the houses and public buildings, and offer an interpretation of most major world events of the last hundred years. The most famous artworks are on the sloping main street, where locals can often be seen in traditional Sardinian dress. After time to arrange lunch, we continue through the spellbinding scenery to the alluring Costa Smeralda or Emerald Coast, named for the brilliant hue of the waters here. We visit Porto Cervo, a glamorous haven for the rich and famous. Created as a utopian vision of a Mediterranean port town, there is a diverse range of styles scattered around the marina; Greek and Spanish influences can clearly be seen alongside the Italian designs. We enjoy time to explore this fabulous town before transferring to Palau, for four nights at the 4-Star Palau Hotel.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
  • Orgosola excursion
  • Porto Cervo excursion
Days 4-5

At leisure and stunning Corsica

Today is free for you to spend as you wish. Perhaps make use of the hotel's facilities, which include an outdoor pool, for a leisurely day. Otherwise, you wish to explore the village of Palau or make use of the hotel's shuttle bus to spend the day on the beach (seasonal). Day 5 Today we transfer to Santa Teresa di Gallura, and join the ferry for a visit to the enthralling French island of Corsica, a wonderfully unspoilt corner of the Mediterranean. We arrive at the southern town of Bonifacio, where you are free to explore. Dramatically sited on a series of limestone cliffs, Bonifacio boasts a ruined Franciscan monastery at the tip of the headland, as well as a fortified Old Town built by the Genoese in the 12th century. Take a wander down through the winding alleyways, pretty piazzas and charming squares to the harbour, where cafes and boutiques are clustered around this handsome, lively hub, before we return to Sardinia.

  • Day 4 - Breakfast
  • Day 5 - Breakfast, dinner
  • Day 5 - Corsica excursion
La Maddalena Islands
Day 6

La Maddalena Islands

We travel to the coast today, crossing over the bridge to Caprera to join the ferry to La Maddalena, the rocky granite outcrop in the heart of the Maddalena archipelago. On arrival at the pretty port, we take a guided tour of the tiny island, admiring the bays and coves on the magnificent coastline. We also see the classic architecture in the main town. There is free time to arrange lunch and perhaps take a stroll around the harbour, before our return ferry.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
  • Tour of La Maddalena
Day 7

The Trenino Verde to Castelsardo

This morning we join the Trenino Verde - again chartered exclusively for Great Rail Journeys customers. The journey takes us across a rugged wilderness and through dense woodland as we make our way across north-west Sardinia. After a thrilling journey we arrive in Tempio Pausania, where we enjoy lunch in a local restaurant. Later we continue by coach to Castelsardo, where we take a guided tour. Set on a promontory jutting into the Mediterranean, the town's beautiful location has discouraged significant development, and during our tour we see the former castle which dominates the oldest part of the town. We also admire the bright pink and yellow hues of the central dwellings, and the cathedral with its colourful tiled cupola. You also have some free time to explore the winding lanes and craggy cliffs before we transfer to the bay of Porto Conte, close to Alghero, where we spend two nights at the Hotel Corte Rosada.

  • Breakfast, Lunch
  • Trenino Verde trip
  • Tour of Castelsardo
Day 8

Exploring Alghero

With a rich history as a Catalan and Spanish colony, Alghero retains much of their influence as well as their medieval fortifications. Today we discover the attractions on a guided walking tour. We stroll through the historic centre, admiring the network of cobbled winding lanes and haphazard squares, as well as the robust sea walls that protected Alghero from invasion. We also see the mighty bastion, the last remnant of the land battlements, which watches over the traditional fishing boats in the pretty harbour. Our tour concludes at a local coral workshop, where we see skilled craftsmen shape the local coral into prized beads and carvings. This afternoon is free for you to explore; perhaps take a boat trip along the coast to visit the famous Neptune Caves, or simply relax in one of the cafés along the sea wall, and watch the sunset over the ocean.

Day 9

Bosa and Cagliari

Today we travel along the scenic coastal road, which curves around the cliffs and offers sensational panoramas, to Bosa, one of Sardinia's most attractive towns. Here we take a guided walk, admiring the brooding castle overlooking the tall townhouses, which line the steep hillside all the way to the river and the port. We then join the privately-chartered Trenino Verde for an amazing journey through some of Sardinia's wildest countryside to Macomer, where we have free time. Later we drive to Cagliari, stopping en route to visit the Nuraghe Losa, one of Sardinia's prehistoric masterpieces.

Please note that deparature SAG604 will stay at the 4-Star THotel in Cagliari instead of the Regina Margherita Hotel, Cagliari.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
  • Trenino Verde trip
  • Tour of Bosa
  • Macomer excursion
  • Nuraghe Losa visit
