Your Nordic adventure begins in London or at your local airport, as you board your flight to Oslo. On arrival, you transfer to your hotel for the next two nights. Norway's vibrant capital, Oslo is nestled by a striking fjord and surrounded by lush, forest-covered mountains. It has been awarded the title of Europe's Green Capital thanks to its array of beautiful parks, but the compact city also boasts a rich and exciting cosmopolitan culture with a host of excellent restaurants, coffee shops and bars.

Discover elegant Oslo on a guided city tour. Exploring the city by coach, see some of Oslo's most popular sights, including the new State Opera House, the Royal Palace, the National Theatre and medieval Akershus fortress. Afterwards, enjoy entrance to the National Museum, which houses the largest collection of art, architecture and design in Norway. Discover the 'Munch room', where you can admire the painter's iconic expressionist work, 'The Scream'. For the rest of the afternoon and evening, you have free time. Perhaps visit one of the museums or galleries in the town. The Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art is a wonder to behold, with an exterior that mixes modernity with traditional wooden houses associated with Scandinavia.

After a free morning, board a train to the Swedish capital of Stockholm, enjoying the stunning Scandinavian landscapes on a journey that whisks you past dense, verdant forests and sparkling lakes. On arrival, check into your hotel for the next three nights, before dinner at a local restaurant in the evening. Stockholm is a city built on 14 islands connected by a host of bridges, and it's beautiful to explore. Wander the streets, lined with a colourful array of buildings, as you start to get to know this intriguing city.

Day 4 - Stockholm

After breakfast, take a guided walking tour of Stockholm's most famous sights. These include 'Gamla Stan', or the 'Old Town', one of the best-preserved medieval centres in Europe, as well as the Royal Palace, which was home to the monarchs of Sweden for nearly 250 years. Next, enjoy a cruise around Stockholm archipelago, the perfect way to see the city's collection of varied bridges, which connect the islands. After the cruise, head to a café to enjoy a spot of 'Fika', a tradition which refers to making time to socialise with friends over coffee and cake. The rest of your day is free to explore on your own.

Day 5 - Stockholm

Today you have a day to explore. Stockholm is bursting with hidden gems, and a stroll through the heart of the city will reveal stores full of handicrafts, antiques, art galleries, and cafés. Perhaps settle down in a local cafe or restaurant and sample some traditional Swedish fare. The country is famous for the Swedish meatball, or kjøttboller, and Stockholm in particular offer up some fantastic seafood options. For those with a sweet tooth, a traditional cinnamon bun, called köttbullar, is a must-try.

With excellent organisation plus a professional and friendly Tour Manager, our trip met our expectations, having travelled with Rail Discoveries and with Great Rail Journeys a few times already. Yes, it was a whistle-stop holiday which left us wishing to return, but we felt that with terrific local guides we got a real flavour of the historic cities we visited. The photo shows the statue of Mr Thon in Oslo.

Unfortunately we had to cut our trip short due to the death of a close family member. We only experienced a day with the tour, but everything we saw was good except for some slight confusion over meals. This didn't detract but didn't allow us to experience the full trip.
