Day 2

Casablanca, Rabat and Fes

Discover Casablanca's unsung charms on a guided tour this morning. Despite Casablanca's most recent and renowned claim to fame in the popular classic film of the same name, the city remains relatively untouched by tourism. See the labyrinthine medina, and Casablanca's 'New Town', before visiting the stunning Hassan II mosque, which is crowned by the tallest minaret in the world.

Following the tour, take the coach to Rabat, Morocco's official capital city. Enjoy a guided coach tour of the key sights, including Rabat's own Old Town, the historic core which enjoys UNESCO World Heritage status. Later, you transfer to the station for the journey by rail to Fes. Spend the next three nights here at the Hotel Barceló.

Day 3

Meknes and Volubilis

Today, delve into Morocco's ancient past and imperial heritage on a full day excursion by coach to historical Meknes and Volubilis. Founded in the 11th century, the city of Meknes rose to prominence five hundred years later when it was established as Morocco's short-lived capital by Sultan Moulay Ismail. Today the city is a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to its architectural attractions designed by the Sultan during his reign, including the incredibly well-preserved Bab el-Mansour gate, which still features the vivid, quintessentially Moroccan zellij mosaic. Continue to Volubilis, an archaeological site boasting extensive Roman ruins dating back 2,000 years, including the remnants of a forum, a basilica and the Arch of Caracalla. Enjoy some time to explore at leisure.

Day 4

Exploring Fes

Enjoy a guided tour of Fes, one of Morocco's oldest cities, founded in approximately 809AD. See the imposing gateway of the Royal Palace and the impressive 17th century fortifications, along with the old guilds, souks and the popular spice markets of the city. Then visit one of the colourful tanneries, a familiar and much-photographed sight of Fes. Dyers wade barefoot into mud pits to dip animal hides into large cauldrons of pigment - a wonderfully authentic experience. Your afternoon is then at leisure to continue exploring Fes - you could perhaps wander into the medina, a warren of narrow lanes where locals go about their traditional daily regimes, and with new surprises and charms around every corner.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
  • Tour of Fes
Day 5

Fes to Marrakech by rail

Leave Fes today and make the journey by rail to Marrakech. As it is a direct service, you can simply sit back and relax while travelling through Morocco's scenic desert landscape. The seemingly endless golden sandy horizon is intermittently broken by the appearance of rural settlements and occasional oases of green dotting the landscape. The countryside grows steadily more dramatic as the train weaves south, and the towering peaks of the Atlas Mountains appear in the distance. Arrive in Marrakech and transfer to the Opera Plaza Hotel for three nights.

Day 6

Discovering Marrakech

Today's guided tour of Marrakech includes the fortified Old Town and modern 'new city' area, which was built by the French at the start of the 20th century. Then enjoy some time to explore the sights, sounds and flavours of Marrakech at leisure. The 'Ochre City', with its impressive mountainous backdrop, is still best known for the Djemaa El Fna, its incredible bustling main square - Morocco's largest. It is filled with entertainers during the day, including acrobats, musicians, dancers and snake charmers, as well as the colourfully clad, instantly recognisable water sellers. Djemaa El Fna is also the entrance to the maze of souks that dominate the area; piles of vividly coloured cloth, spice mountains, jewellers, antiques dealers and potters are but a sample of the traders you will encounter here. With haggling not just endured, but a long-established aspect of their daily lives, the theatre of the souks is a thrilling experience not to be missed. At dusk, the sense of theatre heightens; food vendors descend upon the square, filling the night air with the scent of Moroccan specialities, such as lamb prepared with saffron and orange, mouth-watering tagine, and traditional Berber cuisine.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
Atlas Mountains
Day 7

Day at leisure

Enjoy a day at leisure, or join an optional excursion to the lush Ourika Valley, nestled in the Atlas Mountains and the proud home of the Berber people. Driving through the picturesque Ourika Gorge, pass rural hamlets of stone and baked clay houses, where many ancient local customs still prevail. Included is a visit to a typical Berber home where you can sample mint tea, and a tour of the local market selling traditional Berber crafts. We continue past rivers meandering into the foothills of the mountains on the way back to Marrakech.
