Day 2

Edinburgh & Edinburgh Military Tattoo

We set out by coach for the Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway for our trip on one of the lovingly-restored locomotives. The line takes us along the shore of the Forth and climbs into the hills, before pulling into Birkhill, a picturesque town set on a wooded incline. We continue on to Scotland's cosmopolitan capital, where we have time to explore the city and enjoy dinner before settling into our seats for the highlight of our trip, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. This musical spectacular, featuring the massed pipes and drums of the Scottish regiments, is set against the magnificent backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, perched high above the ancient city.

Day 3

Glasgow at leisure

Today you are free to enjoy Blair Atholl and its wonderful surroundings so why not travel by rail to Pitlochry, one of Perthshire's main tourist destinations? You could follow one of the local trails for a scenic walk into the countryside or visit Blair Castle, one of Scotland's most popular and well known castles with its 16th century Great Hall and beautiful gardens. Alternatively why not head to the Blair Athol Distillery for a tour and tasting to discover one of the whiskies in the famous Bell's Blend. Perhaps visit the local Atholl Country Life Museum with its displays on the social history of the area.

Day 4

Exploring the West Highlands

We set off today on the enchanting West Highland Line, a scheduled service by Scotrail, renowned for its incredible views across the Scottish countryside. Sit back and relax in your seat as the train carries us along the banks or rippling lochs and through verdant forests, past cascading waterfalls and streaming down craggy rock-faces. Rugged peaks and untamed moorland stretch as far as the eye can see, and we reach Fort William under the looming bulk of Ben Nevis. After time for lunch, we take a boat for a wonderful cruise on Loch Linnhe. We enjoy the alternative views of the dramatic mountain scenery and the chance to spot local wildlife, before returning by coach to Glasgow through the Glencoe region and Loch Lomond.
