The Somme

This morning begin to discover some of the famous battlefield sites of the Somme, a region which saw some of the fiercest fighting during the whole of the First World War. Your first stop is Sheffield Park, which remembers soldiers from several of the Pals Battalions who came from the North of England, as well as the Tank Corps Memorial in Pozieres, which marks the site and moment in history where tanks were first used by the British as a new, surprise weapon against the German Army. You will then visit Lochnagar Crater, an enormous basin formed by an explosive-packed mine on 1st July 1916. Continue on to the Thiepval Visitor Centre and Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, which remembers the events throughout the region and honours those who not only died but also the 72,000 declared missing. The final stop on today's excursion is Beaumont-Hamel, where the memorial site includes a preserved section of the front line and remembers the bravery of the soldiers who fought here.
