Kasbachtal Railway

We enjoy a lively journey on the preserved Kasbachtal Railway on some of our tours. The narrow-gauge line is worked almost exclusively by vintage red rail buses, which have become a characteristic of the railway.

Our journey on the narrow-gauge line begins in the pretty riverside town of Linz am Rhein. On leaving the town behind, our train runs alongside the mighty Rhine, before turning off into the steep-sided valley of the Kasbach. Here the rural village scenery soon changes to wilder, natural landscapes, as the railway passes through copses and thickets in view of the river. The train continues its journey by climbing through the rugged hills known as the Ockenfels, passing ancient castle ruins as we ascend further. The track is especially steep along this stretch; trains overcome a height difference of 1,312 ft along the route. The railway then passes a scattering of villages strung out along the valley, before heading into a densely-covered region of woodland. Here the track begins to flatten out as we follow the course of the river to attractive Kalenborn, some five-and-a-half miles from Linz am Rhein.
