Harz Mountain Railway

The Harz Mountain Railway was opened for service in 1897, between Nordhausen and Wernigerode. During the 37-mile journey, the route passes through spruce forests and along the beautiful Warme Bode Valley, as well as running alongside the Harz Mountains. As a result the line has been popular with tourists since it opened.

Although the line had to restrict its services in 1993, it has continued uninterrupted since its opening. Most Harz Mountain Railway services are now diesel-operated, but the railway keeps two steam locomotives in regular service.
