Durango & Silverton Railroad

The narrow-gauge Durango & Silverton Railroad runs for 45 miles through some of the finest scenery in Colorado. The magnificent line is almost exclusively steam-hauled, and is so well respected that it is a designated National Historic Landmark.

Our journey on the preserved railway begins in the energetic town of Durango, overlooked by the mighty San Juan Mountains. From here our train starts to wind its way along the dramatic Aminas Valley. The views from the train are spectacular as we continue along the high rock cliffs and ledges looking over the wild Aminas River below.

The route then passes dense stretches of ponderosa pine forest lining the tracks as we continue through the lower slopes of the high mountains. The train commences its ascent at this point, negotiating a series of creeks and canyons before arriving in the charming village of Rookwood. From here, the line crosses the Aminas River again before passing through Needleton and arriving at the Needleton water tank. Here the steam locomotives take on water, to prepare for the steep climb further into the San Juan peaks.

After passing over a few smaller streams, the railway reaches a plateau, and the line passes through flatter scenery. Our train crosses the river one last time before arriving in Silverton, a former mining town with a distinctive 'Wild West' look.
