For the rest of the day you are free to explore this delightful town at your leisure. We enjoy dinner tonight in the hotel. On Day 2 we take the train to nearby York, a beautiful city with Roman and medieval architecture in abundance. We discover more about this walled city and its centuries of history on a guided walking tour of the main attractions, passing the magnificent Minster and the quaint Shambles. Following the tour you are free to continue exploring at your own pace.

    Day 2 - Breakfast, dinner

  • Day 3 - North Yorkshire Moors Railway

    North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Our excursion today takes us on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for an enthralling journey by steam* across the breathtaking North York Moors National Park. Seated in heritage carriages, we pass through Levisham and Goathland, better known as 'Aidensfield' in television's 'Heartbeat'. Some free time in Whitby allows a visit to the cliff-top abbey and time to explore this authentic fishing port's old town.

    Breakfast, dinner

  • Day 4 - The Settle to Carlisle Line

    Ribblehead Viaduct

We join the scenic 72 mile (116 km) Settle-to-Carlisle route across the magnificent Yorkshire Dales. We cross the 24 arches of the Ribblehead Viaduct, which at 104 feet high and 440 yards in length is arguably Britain's most impressive viaduct. Leaving the Yorkshire Dales, we head into Cumbria and the rolling hills of the Eden Valley en route to Carlisle, where we spend one night at the 3* Crown & Mitre or 4* Hallmark Hotel.

    Breakfast, dinner

  • Day 5 - Hadrian’s Wall Line

    Chester's Roman Fort

This morning we join the Hadrian's Wall Line travelling to Northumberland. Here we visit Chester's Roman Fort, built to guard the Roman bridge that carried Hadrian's Wall over the River North Tyne. We continue by coach to the historic city of Durham, where we stay at the 4* Radisson Blu Hotel.

    Breakfast, dinner

  • Day 6 - Durham

This morning we see the main sights of this beautiful city on a guided walking tour, including the Romanesque cathedral and the 11th century castle, both UNESCO World Heritage sites.

    Breakfast, dinner

  • Day 7 - Tanfield Railway and Beamish Museum

    Beamish Museum

Today we join the Tanfield Railway*, which claims to be the world's oldest railway, and travel along the line to Sunniside, crossing Causey Arch in a heritage train. We continue to Beamish open-air Museum, where we take a step back in time and sample life in 1913.

    Breakfast, dinner

  • Day 8 - Journey home

    Durham Cathedral

After breakfast you are free to depart Durham with the rest of the UK easily accessible from the East Coast mainline.

These meals, where shown, are included in the price of your holiday.

*Where possible the rail excursions will be steam-hauled.

Jun 19 and Aug 14 departures visit the Durham Light Infantry Museum instead of the Tanfield Railway.

July 14 and Aug 14 departures stay at the 4* Hallmark Hotel in Carlisle rather than the 3* Crown & Mitre.

  • Please note

Please note that while every departure of this tour will feature the same excursions, the order may differ from that shown above.
