Itinerary
You meet your group and Tour Manager at London St Pancras International this morning to catch the Eurostar service to Paris. In the French capital, you board the train to Strasbourg, arriving in the Alsace city in the afternoon. Your hotel is near the station, and you have time to explore this pretty city. Strasbourg's impressive main square, Place Kléber, or the half-timbered, riverside houses of La Petite France are only a short stroll from the hotel.
This evening, your group gathers to enjoy a three-course dinner in a local restaurant.
**Please note: For departures 11/05/2024 & 06/07/2024 will be staying in Mulhouse (not Strasbourg).

Lack of planning lead to disappointment in not having sail back from Locarno to Stresa. Food in hotel was merely adequate! Sunshine was very welcome. Centovali trip amazing. Hotel location excellent.

As a single traveller, having paid a single supplement, the accommodation at Hotel Milan at Lake Maggiore was the worst I have ever experienced. A very narrow single baed in a 'cupboard'. When I asked to move I was given a slightly larger room with no curtains, and very noisy from kitchens from 4.00 am. I was told that to upgrade to single occupancy of standard double room, which I have always had before, would cost a further 45€ per night. So what was the single supplement I had already paid for? Food OK, but uninspiring. Travel had problems, as had some excursions e.g. 2 hour cruise had been booked for a day when thee were no boats, followed by long wait and hastily organised coach back to hotel. I enjoyed my trip to the Pyrenees last year, so booked this one, but have now decided that Rail Discoveries is not for the single traveller. Fortunately the group of people were great.

Overall it was a really good holiday. The Itinerary was good. On the first day we set off fairly early on Eurostar but then had to wait at Gare de Lyon for more than 2 hours and finished up dining at 9 pm. I think that this was due to unforeseen circumstances but perhaps could have been handled better. The holiday we wanted to go on was cancelled, and we took the last two places on this tour, resulting in our hotel room not being up to the standard we are used to from previous Rail Discoveries holidays. On the way home we used the same stopover hotel and had free time before returning on Eurostar. Personally , I would have liked to have returned earlier to catch our train home. We had to spend an extra night in London , which was expensive for basic food and accommodation and did not enhance our holiday.

Stresa was a great place to stay. Good selection of lanes and squares with restaurants, bars and shops. An easy hop over to the islands by boat. The restaurant was a little noisy at breakfast and dinner with large groups. But the staff looked after us well. Great tour manager, Les. Due to the large amount of tours, we stayed overnight in Mulhouse instead of Strasbourg, which was a nice change. Mulhouse is good, and the Au Bureau bar is good for food, drinks and sport, and there’s a good selection of other cafes and bars and shops, and a great town square with town hall and church. A good tour. A great group of people on the tour.
