The Harrogate Flower Show 2014
Harrogate and North Yorkshire by steam train
Discover the popular Flower Show in the pretty spa town of Harrogate on this exciting tour. We also enjoy a nostalgic journey on a heritage railway and visit charming Bolton Abbey.
Day 1 - Arrive in Harrogate
Your Tour Manager greets you in Harrogate at the 4* Holiday Inn or the 4* Cedar Court Hotel. After checking in to your hotel, you are free to take a walk through the pretty spa town, famed for Betty's Tea Rooms and its charming boutiques, or take a stroll through Valley Gardens. We dine together in the hotel this evening.
Day 2 - The Harrogate Flower Show
Today we visit the spectacular Harrogate Flower Show* at the Great Yorkshire Showground. The show, voted Best Gardening Event in the UK 2012, is a brightly coloured celebration of flowers, floristry and the art of flower arranging, with superb exhibitions, fascinating demonstrations and beautiful feature gardens. We include entrance to the show, where you are free to enjoy the many attractions at your own pace.
*Our autumn departures visit the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show, which celebrates the harvest with flower exhibitions and vegetable growing competitions. Prizes are awarded for vegetables in many different categories.
Day 3 - A day at leisure in Harrogate
Today you are free to explore Harrogate. The town's attractions include its famous spa and wonderful parks. Just outside the centre of Harrogate is the RHS garden at Harlow Carr. Here you can enjoy a pleasant walk through the charming informal gardens and take afternoon tea at Betty's Tea Room. Of course, you could choose to return to the Harrogate Flower Show. Alternatively, you could catch the local train to visit York, a beautiful city with Roman and Medieval architecture in abundance. Here you could walk on the city walls and take in some of the main sights, such as the magnificent gothic Minster and the quaint Shambles. The National Railway Museum, with its collection of carriages and steam locomotives, should not be missed. Other popular options include the Jorvik Viking Centre, which features a recreated scene of York when it was capital of the Viking Kingdom, and Clifford's Tower.
Day 4 - Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway
This morning we travel by coach to the scenic town of Embsay for a journey on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway#. The heritage train takes us through 4 miles (6km) of the picturesque scenery of the Yorkshire Dales as we make our way to Bolton Abbey station. Here we visit Bolton Priory, where we enjoy a guided tour. We see the atmospheric remains of the priory, which was founded in 1120 AD, and the priory's impressive current church. We also have time to explore pretty Bolton Abbey village, with its charming tea room and shops, before returning to Harrogate for dinner.
#Journeys on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Railway are steam-hauled wherever possible
