The Glacier Express is often known as the 'Orient Express of the Alps' and is also renowned for being the slowest express train in Europe. Travelling along the narrow-gauge railway, idyllic vistas unfold as you wind through striking ravines and snow-covered peaks. Travelling towards Zermatt, which is situated near the foot of the Matterhorn, you will enjoy a wonderful tour through Switzerland's most beautiful landscapes. Day 1 - London to Lake Lucerne
We leave St Pancras International on a Eurostar for Paris. On arrival in the French capital we change trains and travel via Lausanne to Lucerne, for a four night stay at the 4* Seehotel Pilatus in the delightful village of Hergiswil, located on the shores of the lake.
Day 2 - Lucerne
Travel by train to nearby Lucerne, a delightful city thanks to its attractive lakeside setting, beautiful historic buildings and variety of shops. Here you see the Chapel Bridge, the oldest preserved wooden bridge in Europe, and the famous Lion Monument.
Day 3 - A day at leisure
Relax in the glorious surroundings of Lake Lucerne or you may wish to use your Rail Discoveries Tailor-Made Swiss Card for a 50% reduction on fares on public transport to venture further afield and discover picturesque towns and historic cities.
Day 4 - Lake cruise and Rigi Railway
Cruise across Lake Lucerne bound for Vitznau. Here, join the Mount Rigi Railway, Europe's first cog railway, as it climbs to the top of Rigi Kulm. On a clear day it is possible to see 13 of Switzerland's lakes, and as far as France and Germany. From Rigi Kulm you descend the opposite side of the mountain by cog railway to Arth Goldau, to join the train for the route past pretty Lake Zugersee and back to Lucerne.
Day 5 - Glacier Express to Brig
Join the world-famous Glacier Express in Chur. Affectionately known as the slowest 'express' in the world, the journey traverses richly varied landscapes, from snowcapped mountains to peaceful meadows. From Chur, it makes its way along the broad valley before it climbs towards the Oberalp Pass, the highest point of the route at 6,670ft. It then descends to Andermatt and continues down the Rhône Valley to Brig. Here you check into the 3* Hotel Ambassador for a two-night stay.
Day 6 - Zermatt
Travel to picturesque Zermatt by mountain railway, enjoying the dramatic Swiss scenery along the route. Overlooked by the mighty Matterhorn, Zermatt is ideally situated for walks into the mountains or, perhaps make the train journey up to the Gornergrat.
Day 7 - Brig to London
We travel by train from Brig, via Geneva to Paris and onward by Eurostar to St Pancras International in London.
