Itinerary

Day 1 – London & Langenau

Meet your Tour Manager and the rest of your group at London St Pancras this morning and board the Eurostar to Brussels. We continue from Brussels by rail, via Cologne, to Ulm, then transfer by coach to Langenau. Originally a Roman settlement, Langenau is one of the largest towns in the Alb-Donau region of southern Germany and sits in the shadow of the impressive Swabian Alb mountain range. We arrive in the evening and check in for a stay of seven nights.

A three course dinner with selected wine, beer and soft drinks will be served tonight and each night of your holiday.

Includes
  • Dinner
Day 2 – Langenau

Today is free for you to explore Langenau or maybe head out locally. The main landmark of Langenau is the Martinkirche, a medieval church that was built between 14th and 18th centuries. You could also visit the town's Cultural Centre, or Museum of Local History.

The town has good rail access to neighbouring towns, and in nearby Ulm you could walk along the River Danube where you'll find the 14th-century 'rathaus' (town hall) with its stunning façade and astronomical clock. The birthplace of Albert Einstein, Ulm has other claims to fame, including a Guinness World Record for the world's most crooked house and the world's highest steeple, at the top of its beautiful minster. Another popular place to visit is the world-renowned Steiff teddy bear shop in Giengen, less than half an hour away by train.

However you decide to spend the day, you can enjoy dinner with drinks again, back at our hotel.

A packed lunch will be provided by your hotel today, and for the next six days.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3 – Explore the lovely island of Lindau on Lake Constance

After breakfast we visit the island of Lindau today by rail, travelling via Ulm. Set on the edge of Lake Constance, this pretty medieval town has a stunning backdrop of the Swiss and Austrian Alps. You're free for most of the afternoon to explore the town's historical centre around the market square. The main attraction here is the 16th century palace, Haus zum Cavazzen, a beautiful building that's now a city museum. It's also possible to take a cruise on the lake from Lindau.

You could also walk along the harbour, not far from the station, to visit the Mangturm - this 13th-century building was once a lighthouse for the lake, and now has a colourful tiled roof following a lightning strike in the 1970s. There are parks both sides of the island, and a shady promenade along the lakeside with viewing spots and seating areas where you might like to enjoy your picnic lunch. We rail back to Langenau via Ulm and have dinner with drinks at our hotel.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4 – Neuschwanstein Castle and Füssen

Our day starts with a coach transfer to the village of Hohenschwangau where we are taken on a guided tour of the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle, which rises high above the town. Built by 'The Fairytale King', Ludwig II, in the 19th century, the hilltop castle was an elaborate countryside retreat for the reclusive monarch. With stunning towers and medieval-style architecture, the castle inspired Walt Disney's 'Sleeping Beauty'. Enjoy a guided tour of the castle and its grand interiors and soak up the views across the Bavarian countryside.

There's time for us to enjoy our packed lunches before we continue to nearby Füssen, a traditional Bavarian town on the Romantic Road. You are free here to look around the quaint streets and pastel-toned medieval buildings, maybe stroll along the river or stop for a local beer in a tavern. At the end of the afternoon we are taken back to our hotel for dinner and drinks.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5 – Langenau

Today is free for you to explore more of Langenau and other nearby towns. The attractive town of Heidenheim is 35 minutes away by rail, and historic Ellwangen - with a Benedictine monastery - is an hour and a half away by train. Further afield is the modern cultural city of Stuttgart - there's plenty to see and do here and in Bavaria's capital, Munich. The main landmark of Munich is the cathedral of Frauenkirche, with its towering twin onion-domed towers. There's a great art museum, and of course the city is famous for its historic beer halls, where you can enjoy a refreshing drink and lively, traditional entertainment. Dinner and drinks will be served again at our hotel.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 6 – Rothenburg

After breakfast today we visit one of Germany's best-preserved medieval towns, Rothenburg, travelling along another part of the 'Romantic Road' - a 215-mile stretch through forests and mountains. Here we have a guided tour of the colourful Old Town, where you'll see Rothenburg's medieval fortifications, Renaissance Town Hall, and half-timbered townhouses.

After our tour you're free to enjoy your packed lunch, look around the shops full of traditional Bavarian wares, or visit one of the German taverns which might entice you with the scent of tasty local specialities. Later, we transfer back to our hotel for dinner and drinks.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 7 – Free day

Today we have another opportunity to discover the local sights of Langenau or maybe enjoy a relaxing day in the town before our journey home tomorrow. You could choose to return to the interesting town of Ulm, or one of the medieval towns and villages along the Danube such as Geunzburg - where the Lego World Village is based - or Reisensburg, where you can visit the Reisensburg Castle. Augsburg is another charming city to visit, the largest on the Romantic Road and one of Germany's oldest cities. It can be reached by train, travelling via Ulm. However you decide to spend the last day of your holiday, enjoy your picnic lunch somewhere scenic and be sure to return to Langenau in time for our final evening of dinner and drinks at our hotel.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 8 – Homeward Bound

After breakfast this morning, we are taken by coach to Ulm. Here we travel by Standard Class rail to Cologne, where we change trains and continue to Brussels. There's time to reflect on our holiday and experiences as we travel, and in Brussels we join the Eurostar service to London St Pancras.

Includes
  • Breakfast

It was great value for money and very well organised . The excursions were amazing and Stephen Errey (Tour Manager) provided the group , FORTY of us , with lots of printed information each day . Stephen really made my holiday very special , he took great care of the group and had a vast amount of knowledge on the regions we visited .

Enjoyable trip overall. The hotel is in a good location to visit the area, and in a small and pleasant town.

The tour was very well run by the Tour Manager. The hotel was a very good choice, the food being of an excellent standard. We thoroughly enjoyed the included excursions to Lindau, Neuschwanstein and Rothenburg, being very fortunate with the weather all week. The climax of the week was the guided tour round Rothenburg. A place we would return to, as there is so much to view and the atmosphere within the walls is something we will always remember.

The towns visited were interesting and the transport to the towns and back to our hotel each day was good. The visit to Neuschwanstein castle was the highlight of the trip for me. Our tour manager was excellent and looked after us extremely well. The only part of the tour I did not enjoy was the standard class train travel from the UK and back again. The seating was uncomfortable with very little leg room if seated at a table for four, which I was. I also felt that 40 of us was too much; a smaller group size would have been better. It took ages getting us on and off trains with luggage.
